Privacy Policy

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) has developed this site as a public resource for individuals wanting information about the anticipated re-introduction of proposed federal “lawful access” legislation.

Scope:

This notice explains the use and disclosure of personal and other information collected on realprivacy.ca.

At the time the information is collected, you will be informed of the specific purpose for which it is being collected.

Information Collected:

We may collect both personal information, as well as, other information about your visit when you access this web site.

Personal Information – includes information that you submit directly to us. Participation in other site features may require additional contact information to be provided. The personal information you provide using the Write My MP tool is not collected or stored by the IPC. Participation in any of these activities is voluntary, allowing you to choose whether or not to disclose this information.

Other Information – includes, but is not limited to your Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type and version, computer operating system and site visit data.

Uses:

When requesting personal information, we will advise you of the specific purpose for which it is being collected. We will only use it for the purposes for which it was provided.

We do not share your personal information with government agencies or other organizations except with your consent or as required by law.

Other information collected about your visit is used to help us improve site quality and to ensure that it meets user needs as effectively as possible. We log IP addresses accessing our site primarily for reporting and analysis purposes. They may also be used to help diagnose server issues, gather broad demographic data and administer our site. We gather anonymous visitor browsing data to help identify popular content.

Cookies:

We use cookies to improve the quality of your visit to this site. A cookie is a small file that is sent to your browser from a web server and is stored on your computer’s hard drive. It can track how and when you use a site, which site you visited immediately before, and it can store that information about you. A cookie is not a program, code or plug-in. Cookies used by the IPC do not contain personal information, do not give us access to anything on your hard drive, and cannot do anything to your computer.

Commonly, cookies are either described as “session” or “persistent.” We use session cookies to recognize you as you navigate through the site. They expire once you close your browser. Persistent cookies, which remain on your computer until their expiry date, are used to identify you as a unique visitor, to enhance your visit by remembering your preferences and to collect information about how you navigate through the site.

Where the collected information is sent is a function of the type of cookie used. “First-party cookies” cause information to be sent to the domain you see in the browser’s address bar – in this case, realprivacy.ca. The information collected by a “third-party cookie” is sent offsite to a domain other than the one in the address bar. This site uses only first-party cookies and your information will only be sent to the IPC.

We do not use cookies to identify you or to collect personal information. Using your browser settings, you can determine if and how your computer manages cookies. Should you choose to decline them, however, your experience of this site may be limited.

Your Choices:

Providing personal information is voluntary. It is our practice to collect only as much information as is necessary to effectively deliver the service which you have requested.
