Globe and Mail: Canada Involved with NSA Spying Efforts Abroad

The Globe and Mail’s Colin Freeze reports that new information shows CSEC has been aiding the NSA with its global spying efforts in other countries. According to a slideshow presentation which was leaked to a German magazine, Canada has been allowing various diplomatic facilities (such as embassies) to be used in eavesdropping operations. The program entitled “STATEROOM” uses various sites for “SIGNIT” (signals) collection. The slideshow also revealed that these operations are unknown to most Canadians employed at the sites.

Once again, these findings show that our intelligence agency is complicit with NSA surveillance programs and brings up significant questions about the organization. Do Canadians approve of these CSEC programs taking place with no oversight from parliament? Are we comfortable with the mass data collection activities of our government? Can we trust that Canadian citizens are not being monitored in the same way?
